Job Description:Description:Braskem, a global leader in the production of bio-based materials, is committed to reducing the carbon intensity of its products through development of technology utilizing bio-based feedstocks. In addition to its existing biotechnology research center in Campinas, Brazil, Braskem has recently opened a new renewable research and development facility in Lexington, MA. These two state-of-the-art facilities bring together scientists and engineers from a variety of disciplines to ideate and develop novel technologies for the production of bio-based chemicals and materials.Braskem Innovation and Technology is seeking an experienced downstream bioprocess scientist to conduct hands-on experiments in separation processes relevant in fermentation DSP. The candidate will generate process development data around broth clarification and product purification for new fermentation systems. The ideal candidate will be familiar with centrifugation, various filtration steps, ion exchange, crystallization, precipitation, distillation, and others. The DSP Laboratory Scientist will work closely with the DSP bioprocess engineer (who is responsible for designing the process) and will be the hands-on lead to ensure proper data is generated for successful scale-up of novel bioprocesses.Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine and complex laboratory tests following existing protocols and following all safety practices.
  • Develop new experimental setups and document operating procedures for these new capabilities.
  • Work closely with support functions in the facility to prepare the site, procure, and install new laboratory equipment
  • Conduct pre-startup safety review on all new capabilities installed in laboratory.
  • Develop experimental plans in collaboration with the DSP bioprocess engineer, and conduct all experiments necessary to generate process development data.
  • Write reports and develop presentations to communicate key results and conclusions from lab experiments.
  • Work closely with senior engineers to write and develop tech transfer documentation for pilot and demo scales
  • Work closely with engineers at the pilot and/or demo plants to troubleshoot operational issues and find creative ways to continuously improve the process
  • Maintain a clean and operational DSP bioprocess laboratory
Additional Responsibilities and Activities:
  • Stay updated on new laboratory equipment and techniques that may be useful for DSP in bioprocesses.
  • Work with different teams within Braskem (e.g., process engineering, biotech and catalysis, sustainability, innovation, intellectual property, etc.) to guarantee the successful development of projects.
Requirements:
  • B.S. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or other relevant field
  • 5+ years experience in bioprocess laboratory
  • Demonstrated experience in process development for fermentation product purification
  • Experience with centrifugation, filtration (ultra, micro, nano), ion exchange, crystallization, distillation and other relevant separation techniques in purification of fermentation products
  • Strong technical discipline to develop, conduct, and present the results of an experimental plan
  • Ability to ensure good interpersonal relationships to work on projects with internal and external interfaces
  • English and Portuguese fluency is required
  • Candidate will work onsite at Braskem's laboratory in Campinas, Brazil.
