- The primary function of an intern is to develop skills and knowledge of ABS core business functions including but not limited to:
- Engineering Plan Review.
- Technical Plan Review.
- Research and Product Development.
- Operational Safety and Evaluation.
- Data Science and Digital Services
- Interns may provide engineering support in the form of design review and analysis assignments typically involving a major project or several smaller, less complex projects. Projects will vary in complexity and difficulty.
- Under the supervision of an experienced engineer or engineering manager, interns may assist with a detailed engineering review of plans as assigned for compliance with applicable Rules, Regulations, and contract commitments.
- Communicate the status of the current workload to all appropriate members of the team to ensure that the needs of the clients will be met.
- May propose technical advice to field operations and other technical offices.
- May propose new approaches to problems encountered and make recommendations for changes in methods, procedures, or designs.
- May assist in the development of business performance metrics including the development and implementation of an ongoing business performance monitoring program, and the periodic analysis of operating results to determine causes, trends, etc.
- May assist with the writing and presentation of technical papers and reports concerning areas of expertise and work performed.
- May assist with Rule development projects as assigned.
- Interns may collaborate with the digital team and with other departments such as services, class, project management, commercial operations, etc.
- Intern may assist with data collection efforts for data quality improvement, in both existing and new data streams to support overall business goals.
- Bachelor's degree in progress in Chemical Engineering (other related Engineering degrees - e.g., Mechanical, Production, Safety, Process - may be considered).
- Currently enrolled from the 6th semester (or equivalent) onwards.
- Strong interest in risk analysis, process safety and process engineering, especially in sectors such as marine/offshore, oil & gas and mining.
- Availability to work 30 hours per week (e.g., 6 hours per day, Monday to Friday), during business hours.
- Intermediate knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) - especially Excel for data treatment and KPI/risk indicator analysis.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English (and Portuguese).
- Organization, attention to detail and interest in quality, risk and safety from a systems and process perspective.
- Analytical mindset and genuine interest in working with data, engineering information and risk scenarios.
- Proactivity and curiosity to understand client processes, technologies and risk scenarios in marine/offshore, oil & gas, mining and other industrial sectors.
- Attention to detail and rigor in technical documentation, records and analyses.
- Teamwork and collaboration, with ability to interact with multidisciplinary technical teams (engineering, operations, safety, quality, etc.).
- Good organizational skills to manage multiple analytical tasks and deadlines.
- Ethical behavior, focus on safety and alignment with ABS values of integrity and responsibility.
- Academic or extracurricular experience related to process safety, risk assessment, reliability, process simulation or industrial operations.
- Basic understanding of risk analysis methods (e.g., HAZID, HAZOP, Bow-tie, LOPA, FMEA) and/or management systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001) - even if only from university courses.
- Familiarity with process flowcharts, PFDs, P&IDs and basic process engineering concepts (mass/energy balance, unit operations, etc.).
- Experience with spreadsheets and basic data analysis (advanced Excel, simple dashboards, basic BI tools) is a plus.
